2、rus-specificpolypeptidesynthesiswasexaminedunderhypertonicconditions,whichselectivelyinhibitcellularproteinsynthesis.Therabiesvirusproteins(L,G,N,M,,M2)weresynthesizedthroughoutthecourseofinfection,withlittlechangeintheirrelativeratesofsynthesis.TheratesofsynthesisoftheGandM,polypeptidesweremore
3、sensitivetoincreasingosmolaritythanthoseoftheL,N,andM2polypeptides.Extrapolationtoisotonicityoftheresultsobtainedunderhypertonicconditionsindicatedthatthemolarratiosofthepolypeptidessynthesizedundernormalconditionswere0.4(L),64(G),100(N),75(M,),and35(M2).Ahigh-molecular-weightpolypeptide(-190,00
4、0),desig-natedpolypeptideL,wasrepeatedlydetectedbothininfectedcellsandinextracellularvirus.TheestimatednumberofLpolypeptidemoleculespervirionDownloadedfromwas33.Thesynthesisofaviralglycoproteinprecursor,designatedgp78,pre-cededtheappearanceofthematureviralglycoproteinininfectedcellslabeledwith[3
5、H]glucosamineunderisotonicconditions.Incellslabeledunderhyper-tonicconditions,littleornomatureviralglycoproteinwasdetected,butavirus-specificglycoproteinwithanelectrophoreticmobilitysimilartothatofgp78wasobserved.Thisglycoproteincouldbechasedintomatureviralglycoproteinwhenjvi.asm.orgthehypertoni
