4、ges,andwhichwillleadthefragmentedmarketunderthedraggingeffectsofaneconomicmarkets?downturn.Despiteratherlowgrowthforthemarketoverall,asurprisingnumberofvendorssawdouble-digitincreasesinlicenserevenue.ThemajorityofgrowthintheETLsoftwaremarkethasbeenaresultofe
5、nterprisesrealizingthevalueofexistingdata,andtheireffortstocapturethisvaluethroughdatawarehouses.Whileenterprisesarestrugglingwiththedifficulttaskoftransformingoperationaldataintoaformatsuitableforbusinessintelligence(BI)activities,thereisstillnodirectcorrel
6、ationbetweenETLlicenserevenueandtheincreasingnumberofBIanddata-warehousinginitiatives.ThemainreasonforthisisthatETLtoolsarenotyetcommonplaceinlargeenterprises.Themajorityofdata-warehousingimplementationsstillrelyoncustomcodingtodelivertheirETLprocesses.These
7、activitiesareareasofpotentialgrowththat,asyet,remainuntapped.Intermsofmarketsharein2002,InformaticaremainedtheclearleaderintheETLmarket,despiteanoveralldeclineofnearly18percentinnewlicensesoftwarerevenue.AscentialheldtheNo.2positionandsawgrowthofmorethan23pe
