2、owon,ToyotaProductionSystem(hereafterTPS)hasdemonstrateditsoverwhelmingstrengthintherestructuringprocessoftheglobalautoindustry.Thisisevincedbytheon-goingdiffusionofTPSastheworld-classmanufacturingmodel(Oliveretal.1994)or“themachinethatchangedtheworld”(Womacketal
3、.1990),alongwiththeunceasingadvanceofToyotainglobalautomarketcompetition.Indeed,TPShasbeenspreadfromToyotatootherautomakersanddifferentindustriesacrosstheglobe,invariousforms,suchastransplants,joint-venture,imitativelearning,andconsultancies(Ebrahimpour&Schonberg
4、er1984).KoreanautomakersarenoexceptioninattemptingtoadoptTPSforenhancingtheiroperationalefficiencyandbusinesscompetitiveness.TPShasbeentheprimetargetofbenchmarkingforKoreanautomakers,sincetheyhaveviewedToyotaasanexemplaryrolemodelhavingmadesuccessfulinroadsintogl
5、obalmarkets.AtKoreanautoplants,33however,TPShasnotbeenadoptedasitisinJapan,butratherimplementedinadeviantformforsocio-contextualandorganizationalreasons.OurstudyaimstoexaminethediffusionofTPSinKorea,byfocusingontheexperienceofHyundaiMotorCompany(hereafterHyundai)
6、.Hyundaicanbeaninterestingcaseonseveralgrounds:First,Hyundaiisa“Cinderella”caseshowingaremarkabletransformationfromamerelow-costdomesticmanufacturerofadevelopingcountryintheearly1970stoamajorplayerinthecontemporaryglobalautocompetition.Atpresent,itisrankedasoneof
7、globaltop-tenautomakersbyproductionvolumeandbyproductquality(Jo2005).Second,HyundaioffersanexemplarycasetoshedlightonhowTPShasbeenimplementedbyKoreanmanufacturingfirms,sinceitrepresentsatypicalorinfluentialbusinessmodelintermsofcorporategovernance,managementstyle
8、,marketstrategy,andlaborrelationsinKorea.Third,giventhefactthatthereexistslittleresearchliteratureonthetransferabilityofTPStodevelopingcountries,theHyundaicase
