2、lyinmiddleschools,theteacheroccupiesmostoftime,studentsjustsitintheclassroomfirmlytoreceiveknowledge.Theyseldompracticewhattheylearn.ThedevelopmentofCLT(communicativelanguageteaching)mushroomedinthe1970s.beforethat,thedirectmethod,audiolingualandgrammar-translationmethodsa
3、remainlyused.Someeducatorsandlinguistsfeltthatstudentswerenitlearningenoughrealistic,wholelanguage.Theydidnotknowhowtocommunicateusingappropriatesociallanguagesorexpressions.WhenCLTenteredlanguageteaching,authenticlanguageuseandclassroomexchangeswherestudentsengagedinrealc
4、ommunicationwithoneanotherbecamemorepopular.Thepurposeoflearninglanguageistouselanguage.Onepossiblesolutiontobridgethegapbetweenclassroomlanguageteachingandreallifelanguageuseistheadoptionofcommunicativelanguageteaching,whichhasinrecentyearsbecomeafashionabletermtocoverava
5、rietyofdevelopmentinthemethodologyoflanguageteaching.ThegoalofCLTistodevelopmentcommunicativecompetenceofstudents,whichincludesboththeknowledgeaboutthelanguageandtheknowledgeabouthowtousethelanguageappropriatelyincommunicativesituations.Communicativecompetenceentailsknowin
6、gnotonlythelanguagebutalsowhattosaytowhomandhowtosayitappropriatelyinanygivensituations.CLTistodeveloplanguageskillsoflearners,namely,listening,speaking,writingandreading.CLTmakesuseofreallifesituationsthatnecessitatecommunication.Theteachersetsupasituationthatstudentsarel
7、ikelytoencounterinreallife.Unliketheaudiolingualmethodoflanguageteachingwhichreliesonrepetitionanddrills,thecommunicativeapproachcanleavestudentsinsuspenseastotheoutcomeofaclassexercise,whichwillvaryaccordingtotheirreactionsandresponses.Studentsmotivationtolearningcomesfro
