2、arestruggling.Whatfactorsaretoblame?Beijingembodyingthe‘KingdomofBicycles’inthe1980sOncereferredtoasthe“KingdomofBicycles,”Chinarecentlyexperiencedasteepdeclineinitsbicycleuse.Aseconomicgrowthandpercapitaincomeincreasedatstaggeringrates,sodidprivatecarownershipattheexpenseo
3、fthebicycle.From1995to2005,thecountry’s bikefleetdecreasedby35%,goingfrom 670millionto435million.Concurrently,privatecarownershipskyrocketedasthecountrycontinuestowesternize,goingfrom 285,000in1985to18.5millionin2005–atrend thathasrecentlygainedspeed.Toaccommodatetheever-mu
4、ltiplyingprivateautomobile,manyofChina’sbiggestcitiesimplementedseriousmeasures.In2004,Shanghai bannedcyclistsfromafewdowntownroads andothercitiesclosedsomebikelanes inaill-advisedattempttoavoidcollisionsandreducecongestion.Unsurprisingly,theseattemptstocatertotheautomobile
5、havehaddireeffects.Airpollutionhasbeendramaticallyexacerbatedbymassautomobileuse,leadingto shortenedlifespans,accordingtostudies, andinsomecasescausing citiestoshutdown.Andincreasedcongestionhasnegativelyimpactedeconomicproductivitythroughincreasingtheamountoftimespentintra
6、ffic. 11-daytrafficjam,anyone?Now,Chinesecitiesarehavingto back-pedalfromthelatestautomobilecraze.Andmanycitiesareturningtobikesharetohelpsolvetheirautomobile-inducedquandary(seevideobelow),whichhasledtoChinanowbeinghometo79oftheworld’sbikeshareprograms,includingthetwolarge
7、stsystemsintheworld,HangzhouandWuhan.Beijingisoneofthosecitiesinadesperateback-pedalaftersufferingfromsevereairpollutionoverthelastdecade.Priortothe2008Olympics, inattempttocleartheairbeforeshowcasingthecitytotheworld,Beijinginstitutedapolicythatrestrictedcarsfrombeingonthe
