2、orcriticalsuccessuntilthepublicationofTortillaFlatin1935.Steinbeckfrequentlyusedhisfictiontodelveintothelivesofsociety’smostdowntroddencitizens.Atrioofnovelsinthelate1930sfocusedonthelivesofmigrantworkersinCalifornia:InDubiousBattle,publishedin1936,wasfollowedbyOfMice
3、andMenin1937,and,in1939,Steinbeck’smasterpiece,TheGrapesofWrath.Duringtheearly1930s,aseveredroughtledtomassiveagriculturalfailureinpartsofthesouthernGreatPlains,particularlythroughoutwesternOklahomaandtheTexaspanhandle.Theseareashadbeenheavilyovercultivatedbywheatfarm
4、ersintheyearsfollowingWorldWarIandwerecoveredwithmillionsofacresofloose,exposedtopsoil.Intheabsenceofrain,cropswitheredanddied;thetopsoil,nolongeranchoredbygrowingroots,waspickedupbythewindsandcarriedinbillowingcloudsacrosstheregion.Hugeduststormsblewacrossthearea,att
5、imesblockingoutthesunandevensuffocatingthoseunluckyenoughtobecaughtunprepared.Theafflictedregionbecameknownasthe“DustBowl.”Bythemid-1930s,thedroughthadcrippledcountlessfarmfamilies,andAmericahadfallenintotheGreatDepression.Unabletopaytheirmortgagesorinvestinthekindsof
6、industrialequipmentnownecessitatedbycommercialcompetition,manyDustBowlfarmerswereforcedtoleavetheirland.Withoutanyrealemploymentprospects,thousandsoffamiliesnonethelesstraveledtoCaliforniainhopesoffindingnewmeansofsurvival.ButthefarmcountryofCaliforniaquicklybecameove
7、rcrowdedwiththemigrantworkers.Jobsandfoodwerescarce,andthemigrantsfacedprejudiceandhostilityfromtheCalifornians,wholabeledthemwiththederisiveepithet“Okie.”Theseworkersandtheirfamilieslivedincramped,impoverishedcampscalled“Hoovervilles,”namedafterPresidentHoover,whowas
