2、versity,Seoul143-701,RepublicofKoreaAbstractBeetlewingsareveryspecializedflightorgansconsistingoftheveinsandmembranes.Thereforeitisnecessaryfromabionicviewtoinvestigatethematerialpropertiesofabeetlewingexperimentally.Inthepresentstudy,wehaveusedaDigitalImageCorrel
3、ation(DIC)techniquetomeasuretheelasticmodulusofabeetlewingmembrane.Specimenswerepreparedbycarefullycuttingabeetlehindwinginto3.0mmby7.0mmsegments(thegagelengthwas5mm).Weusedascanningelectronmicroscopeforaprecisemeasurementofthethicknessofthebeetlewingmembrane.Thes
4、pecimenwasattachedtoadesignedTMfixturetoinduceauniformdisplacementbymeansofamicromanipulator.WeusedanARAMISsystembasedonthedigitalimagecorrelationtechniquetomeasurethecorrespondingdisplacementofaspecimen.Thethicknessofthebeetlewingvariedatdifferentpointsofthemembr
5、ane.Theelasticmodulusdifferedinrelationtothemembranearrangementshowingastructuralanisotropy;theelasticmodulusinthechordwisedirectionisapproximately2.65GPa,whichisthreetimeslargerthantheelasticmodulusinthespanwisedirectionof0.84GPa.Asaresult,thedigitalimagecorrelat
6、ion–basedARAMISsystemwassuc-cessfullyusedtomeasuretheelasticmodulusofabeetlewing.Inadditiontomembrane’selasticmodulus,weconsideredthePoisson’sratioofthemembraneandmeasuredtheelasticmodulusofaveinusinganInstronuniversaltensilemachine.TheresultrevealsthePoisson’srat
