2、983),replicatingthespiritofMarx’sownanalysisinoppositiontothemoreanalyticalandmethodologicallyindividualistreadingsofrationalchoiceMarxismprevailingatthetime(BarnesandSheppard1992).Second,heextendsMarx’sanalysistopayexplicitattentiontospace,inordertodemonstratethatthegeographicalnatureo
3、fcapitalismfundamentallyshapesitsevolution.Third,heseekstoexplainwhycapitalismcannottranscenditsownlimits,despiteitsflexibilityandinventiveness(hencethebook’stitle).Withrespecttothefirstgoal,hesucceedsbrilliantly.OfthemanyaccountsofCapitalthatIhaveread,Harveycomesclosesttoreplicat-ingth
4、espiritandscopeofMarx.Itisasadcommentaryonradicalpoliticaleconomy,andonthestatusofeconomicgeographyamongeconomistsofallideologicalpersuasions,thatthebooknever1receivedtheattentionitdeservesoutsidegeography.HisgeographicalextensionofMarxhasbeenenormouslyinfluential,however,amonggeographe
5、rsandothersinterestedinthegeographicaldynamicsofcapitalism.Awholelexiconofconcepts,nowwidelyusedanddiscussed,isarticulatedforthefirsttimeinLimits.Theseincludeunevengeographicaldevelopment;thespatialfix;thebuiltenviron-mentasabarriertocapitalaccumulation;thethreecircuitsofinvest-mentcapi
6、tal;territorialregulation;space–timecompression;localentrepreneurialismandinter-placecompetition;theproductionofplace,spaceandscale;finance,fixedandfictitiouscapital;rentandurbanredevelopment;andtheinstabilityofthecapitalistspace-economy.WhenIsatdowntore-readLimitsforthissymposium,Iwass
