2、arts--onetoreplicateTaft&Zhu'sfirstexperimentonmorphemesinmono-morphemicbindingwords,andtheotheronthoseinmono-morphemicnon-bindingwords,inordertocomparehowthetwodifferentcategoriesofwordsrepresentinourmentallexicon.ResultsofthestexperimentshowsthatRTsforthe1-positioncharacteris
3、nofasterthanthend2-positioncharacterinMNBWwords.Thistellsusthatmorphemeshavetheirownrepresentationinthemorphemelevelinmentallexiconiftheyarestrongenough,i.e.occurenough.IntroductionToaccessorretrievelexicalinformationfrommentallexiconisaffectedbymanyfactors,suchasfrequencyeffec
4、t,primingeffect,semantictransparencyfactor,andmorphologicalstructures.Amongthefactors,thispaperfocusesonhowmorphologicalstructurebehavesandwhattheroleitplaysduringtheprocessofaccessinglexicalinformationofChinesewords.Beforewegetintothemainfocusofthisstudy,abriefintroductiontoCh
5、inesemorphologicalstructureisneeded.Herethenotionof“word”inChineseisdefinedas詞ciwhichiscomposedoftwocharacters,heredefinedas字ziinordertoavoidthecontroversyaboutthenotionofwordinChinese(Myers,J.2000).Thus,zi(character)canbeseenasabasicunitwhichcarriesonesyllableandusually1repres
6、entsonemorpheme.Basedonthisnotion,Chinesecompoundsareconsistedoftwocharacters,whichmeansthatcompoundwordsaredisyllabic,butthecompoundwordsarenotnecessarilycomposedoftwomorphemes.Thishappenswhenthecomponentcharactercanonlyappearinthefixedpositionoftheword.1Thiskindofwordisreferr
7、edtomono-morphemicbindingwords(MBW),suchastheclassicalword蚯蚓qiuyin.Andthereistheotherkindofcompoundwordwhichis2calledmono-morphemicnon-bindingwords(MNBW)ofwhichthecomponentcharacterscanappearinotherwords.BecauseofthesetwouniquecompoundwordsinChinesemeaningsofwhicharehardtobeder
