3、nalpolicyintheUnitedStateshasevolvedfromreprocessingtogeologicdisposal,andnowbydefault,toextendedlong-termstorage.Expertsareinagreementinafewareas,oneofwhichisthatadeepgeologicrepositoryisneededforthepermanentdisposalofhigh-levelradioactivewaste.Thestepstowardthatendgoal,however,arethesub
4、jectofwidespreaddifferencesinopinionsregardingtherolesgovernmentandprivateindustryshouldplay,thedriversthatinfluencepolicy,theconditionsImagesource:HoltecInternationalnecessaryforsuccess,thetechnicalinformationneededbeforeaninformeddecisioncanbemade,andwhetherthespentfuelshouldfirstberepr

6、te1970s(notwithstandingabriefendorsementofreprocessingbytheBushadministrationin2006);thechangeswithintheUSdisposalprogramoverthecourseof30years;andthenthemostrecentblowtoUSprogressinspentfuelmanagementwiththecancellationoftheYuccaMountainprogramin2009.Notably,eachpolicyhaditssupportersand
