2、hatdistinctconfigurationsofvaluescannotreadilybemergedwitheachother.Further,itrevealshowconvergenceinjudgmentsovertheright-nessorwrongnessofparticularmattersiscompatiblewithprofounddisagreementonthebasiccommitmentswhichunderwritesuchconvergence.Wepresentevi-

3、denceforbelievingthattwoincommensuratevalueperspectivescaneachprovideitsownbasisforeverydaycommunicationandagreementwhilebeingincapableofbeingunitedwithinsomemoregeneral,unifyingperspective.Ifthecasemadethroughthedialogueisplausible,thentheremaybesubstancei

4、ntheideathat“Western”and“Chinese”valuescannotbereadilyassimilatedwithinasingle,all-embracingvalueperspective.Readersmaywishtoconsiderwhetherthesamepointholdstrueforothervalue-clashes.Inthecourseofthediscussion,theliberalvoice—Dr.Lib—attemptstopersuadetheCon

5、fucian—Mr.Con—thatarapprochementbetweenthetwoposi-tionsispossible.AfterreviewingsomeofthedisadvantagesfacedbyConfucianandindividualisticsocieties,respectively,theliberalsideattemptstosuggestthatacombinationofthetwoviewsmightproduceanethicwhichimprovesonboth

6、Confucianandliberal-individualmorality.Mr.Conresiststhis“imperialist”con-clusion,insistingthatfromhisperspectiveanycombinationofthedifferentpositionswouldlosethecorevaluesuponwhicheachisfounded,andarguinginsteadthat“liberalConfucianism”wouldbenomorethanamod
