2、amagetoengineeringstructuressuchasroadway/railwaysandpipelines.Therehasbeenanincreaseduseoffiniteelementnumericalmodelstostudyandunderstandtheprocessesinvolved.Theprimarydifficultyintheapplicationofsuchnumericalmodelsisthelackofpropercouplingbetweentherelatedprocessesofwater,therma
3、l,andairflow.Thispaperpresentsclassicbenchmarkssolvedwithafiniteelementnumericalmodelingcodewhichdemonstratesthecorrectcouplingofthethermal,hydraulic,andair(THA)processes.Theuseofthistechnologypotentiallyopenstheuseofnumericalmodelstoawiderrangeofapplicationsinarticregions.KEYWORDS

5、ys,andpipelinescanbeaffectedbythermalandwater/airflowprocessesandtheirinteractionwithpermafrost.Thecoldclimateenvironmentcancausedamagetoengineeringstructuressuchasroadway/railwaysandpipelines.Chenetal(2008)addressedmanyinnovativetechnologiesinordertoprotectthepermafrostroadbedinth
6、edesignoftheQinghai-TiebetRailway,forexample,usingnaturalconvectionofairorthermosyphonsetc.tocoolembankments.Naturalconvectionofairisacoupledprocessofairdensity-dependentflowandconvectiveheattransfer.Ontheotherhand,theprocessofoildensity-dependentflowandconvectiveheattransfercannot
7、beneglectedintheanalysisofoilleakpropagationinthesoil.Elder(1967)presentedasignificantexperimentandnumericalanalysisonthebuoyantprocesscreatedbyawatercaseheatedfrombelow.Therehassincebeenanincreaseduseoffiniteelementnumericalmodelstostudyandunderstandtheprocessesinvolved.Goringetal
