2、esEditor’sPrefaceGidduNarayanwasanexceptionallygentleandcheerfulhumanbeingwho,likemanyothersaroundJidduKrishnamurti,unreservedlygavehiswholelifeandenergytothestudyoftheteachings.TherewerethreeprimarywaysinwhichNarayanperceivedhisteacher.First,andlikemostIndiansofhisgeneration,Narayanalwaysregard
3、edKrishnamurtitobeaWorldTeacher,onewhopointstheworldtowardsfreedomfromallillusions,especiallytheillusionthattemptsustofindthatfreedomthroughanotherperson.Second,asamanwhohadspentoverthirtyyearsteachingschool,NarayanrecognizedKrishnamurtiasarareandexceptionalteacherwhosharedhisinsightsaboutexplor
4、ingdifferentpathstorighteducationwiththosewhogatheredaroundhimwiththesameurgentconcern.Narayan’sreminiscencesarecontinuallyimbuedwiththesetwoperceptions.Butthethird,mysticalperceptionofKrishnamurtithatshinesthroughthereminiscenceswasasrealtoNarayanasweretheothertwo.Inmyassociationwithhim,asbroth
5、er-in-law,dearfriend,andwisecounselor,IsawthattohimKrishnamurtimeantallthreethingsatthesametime,andthesethreefacetswerenevereverseparatefromeachother.ItisthisholisticperceptionofKrishnamurtithatisthecommonthreadinNarayan’swritingwhichmakeshisreminiscencesfascinatingandextremelyimportantashistori
6、calresourceforposterity.InadditiontothebiographiesofKrishnamurtibyMaryLutyensandPupul1Jayakar,otherarticles,memoirs,andrecollectionshavebeenpublished,andeachone,asNarayansaid,“hastostandtherigoroustestoftime.”Hehadeitherreadorwasfamiliarwiththeseworks.Butashetoldme,evenifathousandindividualswhoc
7、onsideredthemselvesclosetoKrishnamurtiweretowritetheirmemoirs,itwouldbeimpossibletoanswerthequestion“WhoisKrishnamurti?”withcertainty.ToNarayan,however,thiswasneveraproblem.Hewrotehisreminiscencestoclarifyhisownperceptionofh
