3、ns,andtheverticaleddyviscosityterm.Thesimulationdomainisthedownstream24kmoftheriverthatcontainstheentiretidalreachandaportionoftheupstreamslopingchannelwheretheriverbedishigherthanthetidalwaterelevations.Boundaryconditionsattheupstreamboundaryarespecifiedwithmeasuredfreshwaterinflow
4、,whilethoseatthedownstreamboundaryarespecifiedwithmeasuredreal-timedataofsurfaceelevationandsalinityprofile.ThemodelwascalibratedandverifiedwithwatersurfaceelevationsandsalinitiesmeasuredatthreestationswithinthesimulationdomainfortheperiodbetweenMay1999andDecember2001.Themeasurements
5、tationattheupstreamboundarygaugesabout79%oftheAlafiaRiverwatershed.Theremaining21%ofthewatershedisnotgaugedduetothetidalinfluence.ThisstudyusedtheHydrologicalSimulationProgram-Fortran(HSPF)[Bicknelletal.,1997.HydrologicalSimulationProgram-Fortran,User’sManualforVersion11.EPA/600/SR-
6、97/080.U.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency,NationalExposureResearchLaboratory,ResearchTrianglePark,NC27711.]modeltoestimatefreshwaterrunofffromthedownstream21%ofthewatershed.Modelsimulationsshowthatrunofffromtheun-gaugedportionoftheAlafiaRiverwatershedisanimportantfactorcontrollingthes
7、alinitydistributionintheAlafiaRivereventhoughthemajorityoftheAlafiaRiverwatershedisgauged.Basedonmodelresults,anempiricalrelationshipthatrelatesthelocationofthefreshwater–saltwaterinterfaceatthesurfacelayerwiththetotaldailyfreshwaterinflowisobtained.Theempiricalrelationshipsuggeststh
