3、fthefragmentationofceramicshaveshownthatErnst-Mach-Institute(EMI),themodeoffragmentationisoneofthekeyparametersinfluencingtheballisticresistanceAmChristianswuhr2,ofceramics.Inthestudydescribedhere,thefragmentationofAlONandthreetypesof79400Kandern,Germanyspi

4、nelwasanalyzed:twotypesoffinegrainedspinelwithnominalaveragegrainsizes0.6lmand1.6lmandabimodalgrain-sizedspinelwithlargegrainsof250lmsizeinafinegrain(5–20lm)matrixwereexamined.Theceramicspecimensof6-mmthicknessParimalPatelweregluedtoanaluminumbackingandimpac

5、tedwitharmorpiercing(AP)projectilesofcaliber7.62mmattwodifferentvelocities—850m/sand1100m/s.ThetargetswereJamesW.McCauleyintegratedintoatargetbox,whichallowedforanalmostcompleterecoveryandanalysisoftheceramicfragments.Differenttypesofhigh-speedcameraswerea

6、ppliedinordertoU.S.ArmyResearchLaboratory,visualizethedifferentphasesoffragmentformationandejection.Alaserlight-sheetillu-AMSRD-ARL-WM-MD,minationtechniquewasappliedincombinationwithhigh-speedcamerasinordertoAberdeenProvingGround,MD21005determinesizeandspe

7、edofejectedceramicfragmentsduringprojectilepenetration.Theapplicationofthevisualizationtechniquesallowedfortheanalysisofthedynamicsofthefragmentformationandinteractionwiththeprojectile.Asignificantdifferenceinthefragmentsizedistributionsofbimodalgrain-sized
