3、tunifiesandgeneralizesexistingmodelsofthespreadofsocialinfluencesandmicroorganismalinfections.Ourmodelincorporatesindividualmemoryofexposuretoacontagiousentity(e.g.arumorordisease),variablemagnitudesofexposure(dosesizes),andheterogeneityinthesusceptibilityofindividuals.Throug
4、hanalysisandsimulation,weexamineindetailthecasewhereindividualsmayrecoverfromaninfectionandthenimmediatelybecomesusceptibleagain(analogoustotheso-calledSISmodel).Weidentifythreebasicclassesofcontagionmodelswhichwecallepidemicthreshold,vanishingcriticalmass,andcriticalmasscl
5、asses,whereeachclassofmodelscorrespondstodifferentstrategiesforpreventionorfacilitation.Wefindthattheconditionsforaparticularcontagionmodeltobelongtooneofthethesethreeclassesdependonlyonmemorylengthandtheprobabilitiesofbeinginfectedbyoneandtwoexposures,respectively.Thesepara
6、metersareinprinciplemeasurableforrealcontagiousinfluencesorentities,thusyieldingempiricalimplicationsforourmodel.Wealsostudythecasewhereindividualsattainpermanentimmunityoncerecovered,findingthatepidemicsinevitablydieoutbutmaybesurprisinglypersistentwhenindividualspossessmemo
