3、1.HejoinedtheengineeringresearchstaffandthentheCivilEngineeringfacultyatMIT.Althoughhisfieldofspecializationforhisdoctoralstud•ieshadbeenstructuralengineering,hesoonbecamedeeplyinvolvedinthestudyofsoildynamics.Asoneofthenation'sfirstworkersinthisfield,heservedasaconsultanttoseve
4、ralgovermentagenciesstudyingtheeffectsofnuclearexplosions.Beginningin1964,BobWhitman'sattentionturnedtoearthquakeen•gineering,afieldinwhichhehasexcelled.Hehasbeeninvolvedintheaseismicdesignofnuclearpowerplants,earthdams,andoilrefineries,andhasheldimportantadvisorypoststonumerous
5、UnitedStatesandinternationalagencies.Bobhasauthoredorco-authoredmorethan60technicalpublications,especiallyonsoildynamics,earthquakeengineering,andseismicrisks.Inhisownestimate,withwhichthousandsofpastandpresentstudentsofgeotechnicalengineeringagree,hismostimportantcontributionha
6、sbeenthebookSoilMechanics,co-authoredwithT.WilliamLambe.HeisaFellowoftheAmericanSocietyofCivilEngineersandamem•beroftheEarthquakeEngineeringResearchInstituteandtheSeismo-logicalSocietyofAmerica.In1962,hereceivedtheWalterL.HuberCivilEngineeringResearchPrizefromtheAmericanSocietyo
