1、CHAPTER1INTRODUCTION1.1GEOTECHNICALEARTHQUAKEENGINEERINGGeotechnicalearthquakeengineeringcanbedefinedasthatsubspecialtywithinthefieldofgeotechnicalengineeringwhichdealswiththedesignandconstructionofprojectsinordertoresisttheeffectsofearthquakes.Geotechnicalearthquakeengineering

2、requiresanunderstandingofbasicgeotechnicalprinciplesaswellasgeology,seismology,andearth-quakeengineering.Inabroadsense,seismologycanbedefinedasthestudyofearthquakes.Thiswouldincludetheinternalbehavioroftheearthandthenatureofseismicwavesgen-eratedbytheearthquake.Thefirststepinge

3、otechnicalearthquakeengineeringisoftentodeterminethedynamicloadingfromtheanticipatedearthquake(theanticipatedearthquakeisalsoknownasthedesignearthquake).Fortheanalysisofearthquakes,thetypesofactivitiesthatmayneedtobeperformedbythegeotechnicalengineerincludethefollowing:●Investi

4、gatingthepossibilityofliquefactionatthesite(Chap.6).Liquefactioncancauseacompletelossofthesoil’sshearstrength,whichcouldresultinabearingcapacityfail-ure,excessivesettlement,orslopemovement.●Calculatingthesettlementofthestructurecausedbytheanticipatedearthquake(Chap.7).●Checking
