4、edoneofChina’sfirstSpecialEconomicZonesintheearly1980’s,takingadvantageofthecity’sheritageasatradingcenterandtheproximitytoTaiwan.TodayXiamenisoneofChina’smostattractiveandbest-maintainedresortcities.Xiamenwasfoundedin1394atthebeginningoftheMingdynastyasacenterofdef
5、enseagainstcoastalpirates.Itsprosperitywasduetoitsdeepwatershelteredharbor,thatsupplantednearbyQuanzhou,theportthathadbeenthecenterofthemaritimetradewiththeIndies.Inthemid-17thcentury,XiamenandGulangyuIslandbecameastrongholdofZhengChenggong,knownintheWestasKoxinga,a
6、MingloyalistwhoheldoutagainsttheManchuinvadersuntilbeingdriventoTaiwan.BorninJapantoaChinesepiratefatherandaJapanesemother,ZhengbecamealliedwithholdoutMingprincesinthesouthwhohopedforarestoration.Hebuiltuparesistanceforceofsome7,000junksandamixedforceofthree-quarter
7、sofamilliontroopsandpirates.In1661hedrovetheDutchfromTaiwanandsetupanotherbasethere,beforehisdeathin1662.AftertheOpiumWarsXiamenbecameoneofthefirsttreatyportstobeopenedtoforeigntradeandsettlementfollowingtheTreatyofNanjingin1842.GulangyuIslandwastransformedintoanint
