4、nterandtheproximitytoTaiwan.TodayXiamenisoneofChina’smostattractiveandbest-maintainedresortcities.Xiamenwasfoundedin1394atthebeginningoftheMingdynastyasacenterofdefenseagainstcoastalpirates.Itsprosperitywasduetoitsdeepwatershelteredharbor,thatsupplantednearbyQuanzhou,theportthathadbeenthecente
5、rofthemaritimetradewiththeIndies.Inthemid-17thcentury,XiamenandGulangyuIslandbecameastrongholdofZhengChenggong,knownintheWestasKoxinga,aMingloyalistwhoheldoutagainsttheManchuinvadersuntilbeingdriventoTaiwan.BorninJapantoaChinesepiratefatherandaJapanesemother,ZhengbecamealliedwithholdoutMingpri
6、ncesinthesouthwhohopedforarestoration.Hebuiltuparesistanceforceofsome7,000junksandamixedforceofthree-quartersofamilliontroopsandpirates.In1661hedrovetheDutchfromTaiwanandsetupanotherbasethere,beforehisdeathin1662.AftertheOpiumWarsXiamenbecameoneofthefirsttreatyportstobeopenedtoforeigntradeands
