4、City(UnderthedirectionofMonicaRector)Contextualizedwithinthesettingofurbandevelopment,thisdissertationconsiderscontemporarymanifestationsofinternationaldevelopmentpolicyalongsidetheworkofchroniclersinLatinAmerica.Specifically,thisprojectstudiestheWorldBank’sinvolvementinMexicoCityandRiodeJ

5、aneirooverthelastthirtyyearsinrelationtochronicles--literary-journalisticwritingsdistributedprimarilythroughnewspapersandmagazines--writteninandaboutthesetwocities.ExaminingdocumentsproducedbytheWorldBank’sstaffalongsidetheworkofchroniclersresidinginthesecitiesprovidesaninformedlocalefromw

6、hichtoanalyzetheWorldBank’sapproachtoissuesconfrontingtheurbanspaceswithinLatinAmerica.Thisprojectalsoarguesthatacommongenreofthechronicleexistsinthesetwocities,regardlessofthelanguageinwhichitiswritten.ThefirstchaptercontextualizestheprojectwithinahistoryoftheWorldBankandthegenreofthechro

7、nicleinMexicoandBrazil.ThesecondchapterfocusesonMexico,studyingthechroniclesofElenaPoniatowskaandCarlosMonsiváisalongsidetheworkoftheWorldBankastheyrespondtotheearthquakeof1985inMexicoCity.ThethirdchapterconsidersurbanpovertyinBrazil’sRiodeJaneiroandpullsfromt
