4、iswhichphysicshadthenbeenpassingthroughforsometwentyyears.Foralongtimephysicistshadbeenwonderingwhetherlightwascomposedofsmall,rapidlymovingcorpuscles.Thisideawasputforwardbythephi-losophersofantiquityandupheldbyNewtoninthe18thcentury.AfterThomasYoung’sdiscover
5、yofinterferencephenomenaandfollowingtheadmirableworkofAugustinFresnel,thehypothesisofagranularstructureoflightwasentirelyabandonedandthewavetheoryunanimouslyadopted.Thusthephysicistsoflastcenturyspurnedabsolutelytheideaofanatomicstructureoflight.Althoughrejecte
6、dbyoptics,theatomictheoriesbeganmakinggreatheadwaynotonlyinchemistry,wheretheyprovidedasimpleinterpretationofthelawsofdefiniteproportions,butalsointhephysicsofmatterwheretheymadepossibleaninterpretationofalargenumberofprop-ertiesofsolids,liquids,andgases.Inpart
