3、tknowledgeofthesetruthswasunattainable.Inreply,thereligioussaidthat,inthis,theywerenodifferentfromother‘truths’suchasthoseinmathematicsandscience.Descartessetouttoshowthatknowledgewaspossible,andprovideamethodtoachieveitsadvancement.ForDescartescertaintyan
4、dtruthwerenotidentical:certaintyismerelyastateofmind,truthisapropertywhichrelatestotheactualstateofaffairsintheexternalworld.Buthebelievedthatonlyifyouhadthegroundsforcertaintycouldyouknowthatyouhadthetruth;andthereforethatthepursuitofcertaintyinvolvesthep
5、ursuitoftruth.Hedidnotconfusethesearchfortruthwiththesearchforcertainty.Hethoughtthattherightwayofsearchingfortruthand,aboveall,ofmakingthesearchfortruthintoasystematicprocess,wastostartbysearchingforcertainty.Hisstartingpointwastopre-emptthescepticsbypres
6、singdoubtintohisservicetoastagewherecertaintyisinviolable.Hedidthisbyemptyinghismindofanybeliefaboutwhichhecouldhaveanydoubt.Hedidthisinthreestages.Inthefirst,heputasideperceptualknowledge;inthesecondhedoubtedwhetherhewasawakeordreaming(butatleastherethedo
