2、daswemarkthisoccasion,we’realsomindfuloftheemptychairinthischamber,andweprayforthehealthofourcolleague--andourfriend-–GabbyGiffords.(Applause.)It’snosecretthatthoseofusheretonighthavehadourdifferencesoverthelasttwoyears.Thedebateshavebeencontentious;wehave
3、foughtfiercelyforourbeliefs.Andthat’sagoodthing.That’swhatarobustdemocracydemands.That’swhathelpssetusapartasanation.Butthere’sareasonthetragedyinTucsongaveuspause.Amidallthenoiseandpassionandrancorofourpublicdebate,Tucsonremindedusthatnomatterwhoweareorwh
4、erewecomefrom,eachofusisapartofsomethinggreater-–somethingmoreconsequentialthanpartyorpoliticalpreference.WearepartoftheAmericanfamily.Webelievethatinacountrywhereeveryraceandfaithandpointofviewcanbefound,wearestillboundtogetherasonepeople;thatwesharecommo
5、nhopesandacommoncreed;thatthedreamsofalittlegirlinTucsonarenotsodifferentthanthoseofourownchildren,andthattheyalldeservethechancetobefulfilled.That,too,iswhatsetsusapartasanation.(Applause.)Now,byitself,thissimplerecognitionwon’tusherinaneweraofcooperation
6、.Whatcomesofthismomentisuptous.Whatcomesofthismomentwillbedeterminednotbywhetherwecansittogethertonight,butwhetherwecanworktogethertomorrow.(Applause.)Ibelievewecan.AndIbelievewemust.That’swhatthepeoplewhosentushereexpectofus.Withtheirvotes,they’vedetermin
7、edthatgoverningwillnowbeasharedresponsibilitybetweenparties.NewlawswillonlypasswithsupportfromDemocratsandRepublicans.Wewillmoveforwardtogether,ornotatall-–forthechallengeswefacearebiggerthanparty,andbiggerthanpolitics.Atstakerightnowisnotwhowinsthenextele
