3、increasedascompeti-tionexpandsandproductvarietygrows.Managersarelookingforareastheycanimprovetoreduceinventorieswithouthurtingthelevelofserviceprovided.Twoareasthatman-agersfocusonarethereductionofthereplenishmentleadtimefromsuppliersandthevariabilityofthi

4、sleadtime.Thenormalapproximationofleadtimedemanddistributionindicatesthatbothactionsreduceinventoriesforcycleservicelevelsabove50%.Thenormalapproximationalsoindicatesthatreducingleadtimevariabilitytendstohaveagreaterimpactthanreducingleadtimes,especiallywh

5、enleadtimevariabilityislarge.WebuildontheworkofEppenandMartin(1988)toshowthattheconclusionsfromthenormalapproximationareflawed,especiallyintherangeofservicelevelswheremostcompaniesoperate.Weshowtheexistenceofaservice-levelthresholdgreaterthan50%belowwhichre

6、orderpointsincreasewithadecreaseinleadtimevariability.Thus,forafirmoperatingjustbelowthisthreshold,reducingleadtimesdecreasesreorderpoints,whereasreducingleadtimevariabilityincreasesreorderpoints.Forfirmsoperatingattheseservicelevels,decreasingleadtimeisther
