3、ersIntellectualDisability(IntellectualDevelopmentalDisorder)Diagnosticcriteriaforintellectualdisability(intellectualdevelopmentaldisorder)emphasizetheneedforanassessmentofbothcognitivecapacity(IQ)andadaptivefunctioning.SeverityisdeterminedbyadaptivefunctioningratherthanIQscore.Thetermmentalret

4、ardationwasusedinDSM-IV.However,intellectualdisabilityisthetermthathascomeintocommonuseoverthepasttwodecadesamongmedical,educational,andotherprofessionals,andbythelaypublicandadvocacygroups.Moreover,afederalstatueintheUnitedStates(PublicLaw111-256,Rosa’sLaw)replacestheterm“mentalretarda-tionwi

5、thintellectualdisability.Despitethenamechange,thedeficitsincognitivecapacitybeginninginthedevelopmentalperiod,withtheaccompanyingdiagnosticcriteria,areconsideredtoconstituteamentaldisorder.ThetermintellectualdevelopmentaldisorderwasplacedinparenthesestoreflecttheWorldHealthOrganization’sclassi

6、ficationsystem,whichlists“disorders”intheInternationalClassifica-tionofDiseases(ICD;ICD-11tobereleasedin2015)andbasesall“disabilities”ontheInternationalClassificationofFunctioning,Disability,andHealth(ICF).BecausetheICD-11willnotbeadoptedforseveralyears,intellectualdisabilitywaschosenasthecurr
