2、ngesinmeasuredvibrationresponse.Researchinvibration-baseddamageidentificationhasbeenrapidlyexpandingoverthelastfewyears.Thebasicideabehindthistechnologyisthatmodalparameters(notablyfrequencies,modeshapes,andmodaldamping)arefunctionsofthephysicalpropertiesofthestructure(mass,damping,andstiffness).

3、Therefore,changesinthephysicalpropertieswillcausedetectablechangesinthemodalproperties.Themotivationforthedevelopmentofthistechnologyispresented.Themethodsarecategorizedaccordingtovariouscriteriasuchasthelevelofdamagedetectionprovided,model-basedvs.non-model-basedmethodsandlinearvs.nonlinearmetho

4、ds.Themethodsarealsodescribedingeneraltermsincludingdifficultiesassociatedwiththeirimplementationandtheirfidelity.Past,currentandfuture-plannedapplicationsofthistechnologytoactualengineeringsystemsaresummarized.Thepaperconcludeswithadiscussionofcriticalissuesforfutureresearchintheareaofvibration-

5、baseddamageidentification.INTRODUCTIONTheinterestintheabilitytomonitorastructureanddetectdamageattheearliestpossiblestageispervasivethroughoutthecivil,mechanical,andaerospaceengineeringcommunities.Forthepurposesofthispaper,damageisdefinedaschangesintroducedintoasystem,eitherintentionalorunintenti

6、onal,whichadverselyeffectthecurrentorfutureperformanceofthatsystem.Thesesystemscanbeeithernaturalorman-made.Asanexample,ananti-aircraftmissileistypicallyfiredtointentionallyintroducedamagethatwillimmediatelyaltertheflightcharacteristicsofthetargetaircraft.Biologicalsystemscanbeunintentionallysubj
