3、eferredtoasthevalleyfloor,near-streamzone(CirmoandMcDonnell,1997),floodplain(Batesetal.,2000),orbufferzone(Lowranceetal.,1985).Riparianzoneshavebeendifferentiatedfromupslopezonesbyuniquehydrology,topography,vegetation,andsoils(Hill,1996).Characteristicssuchasanoxiczones,gleyedsoils,distinctsoilcolor
4、,highorganiccontent,breaksinslope,andnear-surfacewatertablesoftendistinguishriparianzonesfromadjacenthillslopes.Becauseoftheirlocation,riparianzoneshavesignificantpotentialtoregulatethemovementofwaterandelementsinsurfaceandsubsurfacerunoffthatflowsfromupslopeareastothestream(Hill,1996).Inshallowsoil
5、mountainwatershedswithsteepslopesandpoorlypermeablebedrock,hillslopeandriparianzoneflowdynamicsarepredominantlycontrolledbytopography.Whiletheflushingofriparianzonesbyhillsloperunoffisafirst-ordercontrolonpotentialchemicaltransformation(Hill,1990)andhillslopewaterexpressioninstreamflow(Hooper,1997;M
6、cGlynnetal.,1999;Burns,2001;McGlynnandMcDonnell,2002a,b),littleisknownabouttheratioofthehillslopeinputsrelativetothelocalriparianzonestorage.Significantuncertaintiesalsoexistabouttheroleriparianzonesplayinregulatingwaterandelementmovementfromuplandstostreams,despitemuchworkonindividualhillslopeandri
