3、illimetre)Inordertocircumventtherestrictionsonthesizeofstandardinterferometers,wehavedesignedandbuiltastitchinginterferometerforlargeplanosurfaces,usingastandardcommercial"small"diameterphase-shiftinginterferometer.Thesystemiscompletelyautomated,usingaPCco
4、mputertoacquireandstitchmeasurementstogethertoproducetheoriginallargesurface.Theadvantagesofthistechniquearelowcost,smallsize,andpreservationofspatialresolution.Also,smallerpropagationdistancemeansbetterhandlingofthesmallerspatialperiods.Onesuchsystemhasbe
5、eninactualuseforthecharacterisationoflargesizemirrors(400x600mm)sinceDecember1994.Inthispaper,weshalllookatthedesignofthesystemandproduce,asanexample,actualmeasurementsperformedonaPHEBUSlaserslabpolishedmorethanadecadeago.Theinterferogramshowsextraordinary
