2、inthecontextofgroupmove-ments.Thus,groupmovementsprovideanexcellentexampletostudycoordinationprocessesinnon-humanprimates.Inthischapterwereviewseveralaspectsrelatedtogroupmovementsinnon-humanprimates.Wefirstsummarisethecurrentunderstandingofvariationinspacingpatterns,typesofleadership

3、,anddecision-makingprocesses.Wethenfocusonmethodologicalissuesanddiscussvariousoperationaldefinitionsofgroupmovements,andweproposeanoperationaldefini-tionthathasalreadybeenappliedsuccessfullyinstudiesofsmallfree-ranginggroups.Weconcludebydiscussingthepossibilitiesandlimitationsoftransf

4、erringconceptsandmethodsfromstudiesofnon-humanprimategroupstoresearchonhumangroups.3.1IntroductionManyanimalsareorganisedintopermanentsocialgroups.Theshiftfromanoriginallysolitarytoagregariouslifestyleisconsideredtobeoneofthemajorevolutionarytransitions(MaynardSmithandSzathma´ry1995)
