1、ComparisonofDesignandAnalysisofConcreteGravityDamABSTRACTGravitydamsaresolidconcretestructuresthatmaintaintheirstabilityagainstdesignloadsfromthegeometricshape,massandstrengthoftheconcrete.Thepurposesofdamconstructionmayincludenavigation,flooddamagereduction,hydroelectricpowergeneration,fishan
2、dwildlifeenhancement,waterquality,watersupply,andrecreation.Thedesignandevaluationofconcretegravitydamforearthquakeloadingmustbebasedonappropriatecriteriathatreflectboththedesiredlevelofsafetyandthechoiceofthedesignandevaluationprocedures.InBangladesh,theentirecountryisdividedinto3seismiczones
3、,dependingupontheseverityoftheearthquakeintensity.Thus,themainaimofthisstudyistodesignhighconcretegravitydamsbasedontheU.S.B.R.recommendationsinseismiczoneIIofBangladesh,forvaryinghorizontalearthquakeintensitiesfrom0.10g-0.30gwith0.05gincrementtotakeintoaccounttheuncertaintyandseverityofearthq
4、uakeintensitiesandconstantotherdesignloads,andtoanalyzeitsstabilityandstressconditionsusinganalytical2Dgravitymethodandfiniteelementmethod.Theresultsofthehorizontalearthquakeintensityperturbationsuggestthatthestabilizingmomentsarefoundtodecreasesignificantlywiththeincrementofhorizontalearthqua
5、keintensitywhiledealingwiththeU.S.B.R.Recommendedinitialdamsection,indicatingendangertothedamstability,thuslargerdamsectionisprovidedtoincreasethestabilizingmomentsandtomakeitsafeagainstfailure.Thevertical,principalandshearstressesobtainedusingANSYS5.4analysesarecomparedwiththoseobtainedusing2
6、Dgravitymethodandfoundlesscomparesto2Dgravitymethod,excepttheprincipalstressesatthetoeofthegravitydamfor0.10g-0.15g.Although,itseemsapparentlythatsmallerdamsectionmaybesufficientforstressanalysesusingANSYS5.4,itwouldnotbepossibletoachievetherequiredfactorsofsafetywithsmallerdamsection.Itisobse
7、rvedduringstabilityanalysesthatthefactorofsafetyagainstslidingissatisfiedatlastthanotherfactorsofsafety,resultinghugedamsectiontomakeitsafeagainstsliding.Thus,itcanbeconcludedthatitwouldnotbefeasibletoconstructaconcretegravitydamforhori
