2、tymilesinlandfromAmoy.HewaseducatedinEnglishatStJohn'sinShanghai.HestudiedatTsinghuaUniversityfrom1916to1919,duringwhichtimeheencounteredhisChineseheritageatitsmostconcentrated.In1919,attheageof23,LinYutangreceivedahalf-scholarshiptoattendHarvard.Hewasmarriedatthetimeandmov

3、edwithhiswifetotheUnitedStates.AtHarvardhereceivedhisMastersdegreeincomparativeliteraturestudyingunderliteraryscholarBlissPerryandhumanistIrvingBabbitt.AfterHarvardLinmovedtoFrancetoworkattheYMCA,andfromtherehewentontotheUniversityofJenainLeipzig,Germany,wherehecompletedhi

4、sdoctorateinlinguistics.LinreturnedtoChinatoteachfor13years.HewasaprofessorofEnglishliteratureattheUniversityofBeijingfrom1923-1926,andservedasDeanatAmoyUniversityin1926.Fromthesummerof1927,hedevotedhimselftowritingforthepopularpressandeditingthreeliteraryfortnightliesinSha

5、nghaibetween1929and1935.NobelPrizewinnerPearlBuckencouragedhimtowriteabookexplainingChinatotheWest.Todothis,heretiredtothemountainsinthesummerof1934.WhathebroughtbackfromthemountainswasthepublishingsensationMyCountryandMyPeople(1935),whichhitthetopoftheNewYorkTimesbestselle

6、rlist.LinwascalledtoSingaporein1954tobeChancellorofthenewlyfoundedbutnotyetoperationalNanyangUniversity.Forpoliticalandotherreasonsitlastedonly6months.Linandhiswifemovedin1965toTaiwan.In1975hewasnominatedfortheNobelPrizeforLiterature,whichtohisregrethedidnotwin.HediedinHon
