2、fieldofgemology.ThisincludesthedevelopmentofGIA’seducationprogram,thecreationofthequality-gradingsystemforpolisheddiamondsthatisnowacceptedworldwide,numerouscontributionstothegemologicalliterature,involvementinnewgem-testingtechniquesandinstruments,andtheestablishmentofaformalresearchprog
3、ram.Hisgreatestachievement,however,hasbeenhispersonalinfluenceontheprofessionalismandethicalstandardsoftheinternationalgemandjewelryindustry.iththisspecialissueofGems&dence.Atthetime,nosuchorganizationexistedinWGemology,wecelebratethe50thanni-theU.S.Intheearly1930s,Shipley—workinginversar
4、yofRichardT.Liddicoat(figure1)partnershipwithhiswifeBeatrice—stimulatedaseditorandnoweditor-in-chiefofGIA’squarterlyinterestamongjewelersbytravelingacrosstheU.S.professionaljournal.Thisfestschrift,orspecialcele-toretailstores,wherehewouldpreachthebenefitsbratoryissue,providesawelcomeoppor
5、tunitytoofgemologicaleducation.Intheeveningsinhisreviewhiscontributionstogemology,especiallyinhotelroom,Shipleywouldwritecoursesforjewel-fivemainareas:education,diamondqualitygrad-erstotakethroughcorrespondence.Heestablisheding,gemidentification,instrumentdevelopment,thebeginningsofaneduc
6、ationalinstituteinLosandglobalinformationoutreach.FollowingtheleadAngeleswithasmallstaffthatgrewslowlyovertheofGIA’sfounder,RobertM.Shipley,Liddicoatposi-nextdecadeasresourcesallowed.Together,heandtionedGIAasaleadinginternationaleducationalhisstaffcreatedlessons,gaveinstructionongem-insti
