4、interfaceinAsia.Here,wepresentanintegratedstudyoffarmingpracticesandthequalityofwater,sediments,soilsandagriculturalproductsinsmall-scalevegetablefarmingsystemsintwocontrastingperi-urbanareaswithdifferentlevelsofindustrialdevelopmentintheYangtzeRiverDeltaRegionofChina.Applicationoflargeamount
5、sofcowmanuretovegetablesinNanjing,avegetable-basedperi-urbanarea,hadcausedanaccumulationofN,P,Cu,ZnandavailableCdinsoil.ThisresultedinhighCdinsomevegetablesandhighconcentrationsofNandPinsurfacewater.BecauseofashorterhistoryofvegetableproductioninWuxi,anindustrializedperi-urbanarea,theaccumula
6、tionofNandPinsoilswasless,buthighavailableCdduetolowsoilpHassociatedwithapplicationoflargeamountsofinorganicfertilizershadresultedinhighCdinsomevegetables.HeavymetalpollutionintheWuxiareamainlycamefromatmosphericdepositionanddischargeofeffluentfromfactoriesandwashigherthaninthelessindustrializ
7、edareainNanjing.Developmentanddisseminationofstrategiesformoreefficientuseoffertilizersinvegetablefarmingcouldbenefitbothfarmprofitabilityandtheenvironmentandshouldbecoupledwithtreatmentofmunicipalwastebeforedischargeandcontroloffactoryemissions
