2、Agreeing,however,withHoraceWalpolethataneditorshouldnotdwellforanylengthoftimeonthemeritsofhisauthor,weshalltouchbutlightlyonthispartofthematter.WearethemorereadytoabstainsincethegreatsuccessinEnglandoftheformereditionsoftheseMemoirs,andthehighreputationtheyhaveacquiredontheEuropeanCon
3、tinent,andineverypartofthecivilisedworldwherethefameofBonapartehaseverreached,sufficientlyestablishthemeritsofM.deBourrienneasabiographer.Thesemeritsseemtoustoconsistchieflyinananxiousdesiretobeimpartial,topointoutthedefectsaswellasthemeritsofamostwonderfulman;andinapeculiarlygraphicpo
4、werofrelatingfactsandanecdotes.WiththishappyfacultyBourriennewouldhavemadethelifeofalmostanyactiveindividualinteresting;butthesubjectofwhichthemostfavourablecircumstancespermittedhimtotreatwasfullofeventsandofthemostextraordinaryfacts.Theheroofhisstorywassuchabeingastheworldhasproduced
5、onlyontherarestoccasions,andthecompletecounterparttowhomhas,probably,neverexisted;fortherearebroadshadesofdifferencebetweenNapoleonandAlexander,Caesar,andCharlemagne;neitherwillmodernhistoryfurnishmoreexactparallels,sinceGustavusAdolphus,FredericktheGreat,Cromwell,Washington,orBolivarb
