3、ngandteachersneedtoconstantlyreflectonwhatlanguageis.Thisisbecauseourunderstandingsoflanguageaffectthewaysweteachlanguages.LanguageascodeTraditionally,languageisviewedasacode.Inthisview,languageismadeupofwordsandaseriesofrulesthatconnectwordstogether.Iflanguageisonlyview
4、edinthisway,languagelearningjustinvolveslearningvocabularyandtherulesforconstructingsentences.Thisunderstandingoflanguageis,however,averynarrowone.Itseeslanguageasfixedandfiniteanddoesnotexplorethecomplexitiesinvolvedinusinglanguageforcommunication.Languageassocialpracti
5、ceAnunderstandingoflanguageas‘open,dynamic,energetic,constantlyevolvingandpersonal’(Shohamy,2007:5)encompassestherichcomplexitiesofcommunication.Thisexpandedviewoflanguagealsomakeseducationalexperiencemoreengagingforstudents.Languageisnotathingtobestudiedbutawayofseeing,
6、understandingandcommunicatingabouttheworldandeachlanguageuseruseshisorherlanguage(s)differentlytodothis.Peopleuselanguageforpurposefulcommunicationandlearninganewlanguageinvolveslearninghowtousewords,rulesandknowledgeaboutlanguageanditsuseinordertocommunicatewithspeakers
7、ofthelanguage.Thisunderstandingoflanguageseesalanguagenotsimplyasabodyofknowledgetobelearntbutasasocialpracticeinwhichtoparticipate(Kramsch,1994).Languageissomethingthatpeopledointheirdailylivesandsomethingtheyusetoexpress,createandinterpretmeaningsandtoestablishandmaint
