2、ons.Theelementhasthecapabilitytomodelplasticaxialdeformationandchangesinaxialstiffness,anditemployshardeningrulestohandlemonotonic,cyclic,orarbitraryloading.Whencomparedwithexperimentalresultsand®bermodelpredictions,theelementshowssigni®cantlybetterperformancethantypicalbilinearhingemodels.Thede

3、velopedelementcanmoreaccuratelypredictlocaldeformationdemandsandtheoverallresponseofstructuralsystemsunderearthquakeloadingthanthebilinearhingeelement.GENERALbehaviorinearthquakes(Schiff1988;TsaiandPopov1988;Schneideretal.1991;SAC1995a).Steelmomentresistingframes(MRFs)designedaccordingDespitethe

4、commonuseofthebilinearhingeelement,thetocurrentbuildingcodesareexpectedtodeformwellintotheaccuracyofthiselementforpredictingactualinelasticsteelinelasticrangeduringsevereearthquakegroundmotions.In-beamorbeam-columnresponseissomewhatlimited.Theac-elasticdeformationsofMRFsaretypicallyconcentratedi

5、ncuracyofthismodelcanbeevaluated,forexample,bycom-criticalregionsattheendsofgirdersandcolumnsandincol-parisonwithexperimentalresults,orbycomparisonwiththeumnpanelzones.Toaccuratelypredictthebehaviorofastruc-resultsofmoresophisticatedmodels.Inthefollowingpara-tureduringearthquakeexcitations,analy
