2、gthatArendtseekstobalanceGreekandRomannotionsoffreedomwithmodernconceptionsofthewill.Thesolipsisticwillposesathreattopolitics(itisthesourceofsovereigntyitself).Yetthewillisafactofmodernlifeandcannotbeignored.Iarguethatdespiteherembraceofclassicalunde
3、rstandingsoffreedomascontingency,Arendtseekstolimitcontingencyandevenfreedomitself.Shedoesthistoaccommodatethewillwhichmusthavesomesenseofagencyandcontinuityinordertobeabletofunctionatall.Arendtarguesthatsovereigntycan,ifproperlyconstrained,producea‘
4、certainlimitedreality’andcan(alongwithlove)serveasabasisforpolitics.IclaimthatArendtsacrificesherclassicalideals,allowingforthepossibilityofamodern,lesserversionoffreedom(whichinherviewisbetterthannofreedomatall).Keywordslove·promising·sovereignty·wil
5、lThisarticlewillfocusonaparadoxinArendt’sthinking:ontheonehand,Arendtisdeeplysuspiciousofwhatshecallsthe‘antipolitical’,i.e.thoseaspectsofhumanlife(includinglove,theprivate,andevensovereignty)thatareatoddswithherdesiretore-establishapublicortrulypoli
6、ticalcommunity.Yet,atthesametime,atcertainpointsinherwriting,Arendtseemstoturntopreciselythesesupposedlyantipoliti-calforcesasthebasisforpoliticsitself.Inthefollowingpages,IwillexplainthisparadoxbywayofaconsiderationofhowArendt,howeverreluctantly,dis
