2、ois,U.S.A.Thispaperdevelopsatheoryofstrategicgroupidentitythatexplainshowstrategicgroupsemergeinanindustryandhowtheycanaffect®rmbehaviorsandoutcomes.Insodoing,itprovidesatheoreticalbasisfortheexistenceofstrategicgroups.Wearguethatmanagerscognitivelypartitiontheirindustryenvironmenttoreduceuncerta

3、intyandtocopewithboundedrationality.Sociallearningtheoryandsocialidenti®cationtheoryareusedtodescribehowcognitivegroupscoalesceintomeaningfulsubstructuresandhowagroup-levelidentityemerges.Wedescribethewaysinwhichmacrolevelfactorsconditionthedevelopmentofgroupsandtheiridentities.Weintroducethenoti

4、onofastrongidentity,whichcharacterizesanygroupsuf®cientlyrecognizedandattendedtobymemberstoaffectindividualaction.Groupswith`weakidentities'arenomorethantransientagglomerationsof®rmsanddonotexistinanymeaningfulsense.Theseideasaredevelopedintopropositionsthatdescribetheconditionsunderwhichgroupswi

5、thstrongidentitiesarelikelytoemerge.Asecondsetofpropositionsdescribestheirtransformationovertime.Identitystrengthislinkedtobothpositiveandnegativeoutcomesina®nalsetofpropositions.Weshowhowstrategicgroupswithstrongidentitiescanaffect®rmperformance,resolvingalongstandingproblemwhichhasplaguedstrate
