2、ingsanddampers.Manyengineeringproblemsaresolvedbyanalysesbasedonidealmodelsofanactualsys-tem,givinganswersthatareusefulthoughapproximate.Ingeneral,moreaccurateresultsareobtainedbyincreasingthenumberofmasses,springs,anddampers;i.e.,byincreasingthenumbero
3、fdegrees-of-freedom.Asthenumberofdegrees-of-freedomisincreasedwithoutlimit,theconceptofthesystemwithdistributedmassandelasticityisformed.Thischapterdiscussesthefreeandforcedvibrationofsuchsystems.Typesofsystemsincluderodsvibratingintorsionalmodesandinte
4、nsion-compressionmodes,andbeamsandplatesvibratinginflexuralmodes.Particularattentionisgiventothecalculationofthenaturalfrequenciesofsuchsystemsforfurtheruseinotheranalyses.Numerouschartsandtablesareincludedtodefineinreadilyavailableformthenaturalfrequen
