3、tionofthephosphorusremovalprocessitisnecessarytohavetestsenablingapropercharacterizationofthemicrobialpopulationintheactivatedsludge.Inthisstudyweevaluatedthepossibilityofanoxicphosphorusreleaseoraerobic/anoxicphosphorusuptaketestsforsludgecharacterization.Heretowee
4、mployedsludgemixturesofenrichmentculturesfromlaboratorysequencingbatchreactor(SBR)systemsoperatedunderaanaerobic-aerobic(A/O)oranaerobic-anoxic(A2)conditions.Itisshownthatinterpretationofphosphorusreleasetests,withorwithoutnitratepresent,isdifficult.Ontheotherhandac
5、omparisonofphosphorusuptakeunderaerobicandanoxicconditionsleadstoastraightforwardcharacterizationofthemicrobialpopulationinthephosphorusremovingorganisms,withrespecttotheirphosphorusremovalactivityunderaerobicandanoxicconditions.©1997ElsevierScienceLtd.Allrightsrese
