2、oryasnarrativeisgivenaradicalinterpretationthatchallengesnotonlythetruth-claimofhistoricalnarratives,butalsotheverydistinctionbetweenfactandfiction,realityandtextuality.BydrawingonbothChineseandWesternsources,thisarticlerevisitsthedebateonhistoryandfictionality,andrefutes
3、boththeextremepositionofinsistingontheobjectivetruthofhistoricalrepresentationandthecompletelyrelativistviewthatdenieshistorythepossibilityofrepresentingreality.Giventheinfluenceofthepostmoderntheories,itisparticularlyimportanttoacknowledgethedifferencebetweenhistoricala
4、ndliterarynarratives.Historyasnarrativeshareswithliteratureelementsofconstructiveimagination,butitultimatelydependsonacoreoffactsverifiablebynon-linguisticmeans.Whenwerealizethatthetruthrecoveredfromthepastinhistoricalwritingisnotfinalandabsolute,butcanbeimprovedtoapproxi
