3、8.4°N,66.7°W,dip49.7°)andMillstoneHill(42.6°N,71.5°W,dip71.6°),respectively,shapefactorshavebeenderivedbyfittingtheISRobservedprofileusingaChapman-typelayerwithaheight-independentscaleheight.Theresultsrevealthattheshapefactorshowsageneraldeparturefromthetypic
4、allyusedvaluesof0.5(Chapmanalayer)exceptduringthenightandalsoundergoesappreciablevariationwithlocaltime,season,solaractivity,andlatitude.OverArecibo,theaveragedshapefactorischaracterizedbyadaytimemaximumof0.55–0.75,anearlyconstantnighttimevaluecloseto0.5,and
5、amarkedmorningdecline;overMillstoneHill,theshapefactorshowspronouncedseasonalvariations,andthediurnalvariationinsummerisoppositetothatinotherseasons.Overbothstations,theshapefactorexhibitsahighcorrelationwiththeF2layerpeakelectrondensity(NmF2),andithasstrongs
6、olarcycledependenceduringthelatemorninghours.Itindicatesthatthetemperaturestructureofthetopsideionospherecanexplainmuchofthevariationoftheshapefactorwhentheplasmadensityislow,especiallyduringnighttime.Duringdaytimehours,thetopsideshapefactoristhoughttobeassoc
