3、,doesnotparticularlycarewhichserverisused.Anycastingisainternetworkservicewhichmeetsthisneed.Ahosttransmitsadatagramtoananycastaddressandtheinternetworkisresponsibleforprovidingbesteffortdeliveryofthedatagramtoatleastone,andpreferablyonlyone,oftheserversthatacceptdatagramforthean

4、ycastaddress.Themotivationforanycastingisthatitconsiderablysimplifiesthetaskoffindinganappropriateserver.Forexample,users,insteadofconsultingalistofarchiveserversandchoosingtheclosestserver,couldsimplytype:telnetarchie.netandbeconnectedtothenearestarchiveserver.DNSresolveswouldno

5、longerhavetobeconfiguredwiththeIPaddressesoftheirservers,butrathercouldsendaquerytoawell-knownDNSanycastaddress.MirroredFTPsitescouldsimilarlyshareasingleanycastaddress,anduserscouldsimplyFTPtotheanycastaddresstoreachthenearestserver.ArchitecturalIssuesAddinganycastingtotherepert

6、oireofIPservicesrequiressomedecisionstobemadeabouthowtobalancethearchitecturalrequirementsofIPwiththoseofanycasting.Thissectiondiscussesthesearchitecturalissues.ThefirstandmostcriticalarchitecturalissueishowtobalanceIP'sstatelessservicewiththedesiretohaveananycastaddressrepresent
