3、emisbasedonanewlydevelopedactuatormodelandthesolutionofcoupledcrackandactuatorproblems.Theinteractionbetweenanactuatorandacrackisstudiedtodevelopbasicunderstandingoftheeffectofthecrackuponthewavefieldgenerated.Theresultingwavefieldisusedtosimulatesensorsignals.Scatteredwavefromthe
4、crackisthenregeneratedbysolvingareverseelastodynamicproblemandusedinanimagingtechniquetoidentifythecrack.Keywords:actuators,cracks,imagingtechnique,interaction,piezoelectric,wavepropagation.1.IntroductionPiezoceramicmaterialswhicharecapableofgeneratinglargerstrainsunderelectricfi
5、eldshaverevivedtheintensedevelopmentofnewpiezoceramicactuators/sensorsfordifferentengineeringapplications,e.g.spacestructures,aircraftstructures,satellites,andotherelec-tromechanicalsystems(Hagoodetal.,1990;TzouandYe,1994;MitchellandReddy,1995;Boller,2000).Piezoceramicactuatorsa
6、reoflowcostandcanbeeasilyfabricatedintodifferentdesiredsizesandshapes.Correspondingly,theconceptofusinganetworkofactuatorsandsensorstoformselfmonitoringsmartsystemsinadvancedstructuraldesignhasattractedsignificantattentionfromtheindustrialandresearchcommunities(Mal,2001;Kessleran
7、dSpearing,2002).Indeed,thistypeofactuators/sensorshavebeenusedindamagedetectioninvariousstructures(Wuetal.,1993;KeilersandChang,1995a,b;Charlesetal.,1995;Okaforetal.,1996;Dattaetal.,1996;Rogers,1999;Schulzetal.,1999;Giurgiutiu,2001;Fukunagaetal.,2002).Differentfromthetraditional
