1、Why“protonconductingmaterials”??Fuelcell,akindofelectrochemicaldevicesthatcanallowdirectconversionfromchemicalenergytoelectricalenergy,hasbeengivenincreasinglymoreattentionduetoitshighconversionefficiencyandnegligiblepollutantemission[1].Amongthevarioust
2、ypesoffuelcells,SOFCshavetheiruniqueadvantages,suchasnocorrosion,noleakage,beingabletousekindsofhydrocarbongas(suchasmethaneandethane)orsyngasasfuelandtheirhighconversionefficiency[2].Inrecentdecades,intenseinvestigationhasbeenperformedintoSOFC,especiall
3、ythosewithoxide-ionconductingelectrolyte.Andsomecommercialmanufactures[3],representedbySiemensWestinghouseCo.[4],emergedatthehistoricmomentandcontributedmuchtothepracticalapplicationandcommercializationofSOFC.However,oneofthedrawbacksthathindersitswideap
4、plicationisthehighoperatingtemperature(800℃-1000℃)[5].Recently,aneverrisingnumberofresearchers[6]havebeenattemptingtoreducetheoperatingtemperatureofSOFCand,meanwhile,guaranteetherelativelyhighionicconductivity.Toachievethisgoal,twomainapproacheshavebeent
5、aken:reducethethicknessofelectrolyteordevelopnovelmaterialsthathavehighionicconductivityatintermediatetemperature.Asisknown,developmentofthin-filmpreparationtechniques,suchaselectrochemicaldeposition,plasmaspraying,tapecasting,tapecalendaringandetal.,mak
6、esitnotthatdifficulttofabricateelectrolytewiththicknessof10-30μm.However,theelectrolytecanneverbemadetoothinas,ifso,itbecomeseasiertobebrokendownbylocaloverheatingorhighervoltageandmayalsobetoofragileduetothepoormechanicalproperty[7].Hence,developingalte
7、rnativematerialswithhighionicconductivityatintermediatetemperatureappearsmorepracticalandpotential.BaCeO3basedoxides,firstreportedbyIwahara[8]thatcanefficientlyconductprotonatrelativelylowtemperature,havebeenpaidgrowinginterestaspromisingproton-conductin
8、gmaterialsthatcanbeusedinintermediatetemperatureSOFC.At600℃,thehighestprotonconductivityofBaCeO3-basedoxidesis10-2Scm-1,largerthanthatofYSZatthesametemperature,anditselectronconductivityisnegligible.Comparedwithconventiona
