4、optedfirstasa‘foreign’language,English,inrecentyears,hasbecomeanindispensablepartoflifefortheNepalesepeople.Infact,itispresentlyusedasanadditionallan-guage,secondlanguageandevenprimarylanguageinmanysocio-economicandeducationaldomainsinNepal.EventhoughEnglishhadbeeninuseinNepalforalongtime,itwasonl
5、yadoptedasaforeignlanguageintotheformaleducationsys-teminthefirsthalfofthetwentiethcentury,anditcontinuestohavethisstatus,despitethefactthatscholarsandusersofthelanguageclaimthatitisanythingbutforeign.Itscurrentdominationinallspheresoflifemakesthelanguageindispens-ableandonaparwithNepali,currently
6、theonlyofficiallanguageforwidercom-munication.Assuch,manyadvocatethatEnglishinNepaldeservesgreaterrecognitionthanthetermforeignlanguageoffers.Thepresentarticlemakesasocio-linguisticanalysisoftheEnglishlanguagesituationinNepaland,drawingfromresearchandtheavailableliterature,itassessestowhatextentth
