3、caltreatisesonthesubject,theyweretolearnaboutphenomenologyinadirectandpracticalway.Tothatend,shewouldsay,eachonewastochoosesomeaspectofhisorhereverydayexperience,somethingsimpleandstraightforward,and,settingasideallinterpretationsandcausalaccounts,writeadescriptionofthate
4、xperience,tellingwhatitwaslike,per•sonally,asaneventofhisorherownconsciousness.Happyforanyrespitefromthedemandsofconceptualanalysis,thestu•dentswouldtypicallywarmtothetask.Unbeknownsttothem,however,theirfledglingeffortswereneverread,thougheachonewouldbepromptlyreturnedbea
5、ringthesametersecom•ment:"tooabstract,interpretiveandtheoretical,notconcretenordescriptiveenough."Lessenthusiastically,thestudentswouldsetaboutrewriting;yetwitheachrevisionmycolleaguewouldtakethesametack.Thiscyclewouldcontinueuntil,atlast,someexasperatedstudentwouldinevit
6、ablyblurtout:"Thisishopeless!""Yesitis,"mycolleaguewouldconcede."Somuchforphenomenology."Phenomenologistsareapttofindtheplotofthisdramamoregallingthanchallenging.Afterall,ithingesontakingoneaspectofaphenomenologicalprocedure,abstractingitfromthebroadercontextandpurposesin
