2、targuesthatwemustdepartconsiderablyfromFrege’sownviewsifwearetoworktowardsanadequateconceptionofnaturallanguage.MarkSainsburysuggeststhatthetwoaspectsthataremostimportanttoretaininFrege’sworkarethedistinctionbetweensenseandreference,andthepossibilityofsensewithoutare
3、ferent.Manyphilosopherstodaytaketheequationofsensewith“modeofpresentationofanobject”or“wayofthinkingofanobject”asdefinitiveofFregeanism.AlthoughsomeofFrege’swordsdosuggestthisview,Sainsburyarguesthatitisnotrequiredforthedistinctionbetweensenseandreference.Moreover,it
4、makesitdifficulttoaccommodatesensewithoutareferent,andimpossibletodojusticetoFrege’sclearcommitmenttosenseasthecommonpropertyofallwhospeakalanguage.Inthisselectionofessays,MarkSainsburybringsanewpositionintoview.Itshareswithcurrent“directreference”theoriestherejectio
