3、dialoguewithmyselfaboutwhethertoquitphilosophy,evengiveuptenure,todosomethingelse.Inspiteofmydeeploveforphilosophy,itjustdidn’tseemworthit.AndIamoneoftheveryluckyones.Oneoftheoneswhohasbeensuccessfulbythedominantstandardsoftheprofession.Whateverthenumberssayaboutwomen

4、andminoritiesinphilosophy,numbersdon’tbegintotellthestory.Thingsmaybegettingbetterinsomecontexts,buttheyarefarfromacceptable.OutrightdiscriminationThesituationforwomeninphilosophyhasbeenchangingoverthepastseveraldecadesandeverywoman’sexperienceisdifferent.Iwasingradua

5、teschoolatBerkeleybetween1979-1985.Ihaveheldtenure-trackortenuredpositionsinfiveschools.Iamnowafullprofessor.Buttherankoffullprofessorsisbroadandtherearemanywomen,suchasmywonderfulcolleagueJudithThomson,whocamethroughinanerainwhichthesituationwasverydifferentfromand,t

6、omymind,muchworsethanmine.Sotherehasbeenprogress.However,thattherearetrendsthathavecontinuedthroughoutmytimeintheprofession,becauseIseeevidenceofthemtoday.Whytherearen’tmorewomenofmycohortinphilosophy?Becausetherewereveryfewofusandtherewasalotofoutrightdiscrimination.

7、Ithinkalotofphilosophersaren’tawareofwhatwomenintheprofessiondealwith,soletmegivesomeexamples.InmyyearatBerkeleyandinthetwoyearsaheadofmeandtwoyearsbehindme,therewasonlyonewomaneachyearinaclassof8-10.Thewomeninthetwoyearsaheadofmeandthetwoyearsbehindmedroppedout,soIwa
